Situation: A screwdriver penetrates the insulation inside an energized junction box and contacts a live conductor and the neutral bus. Recognition: Measured resistance between phase and neutral is near zero compared with normal circuit resistance. Action: Fault current surges through the low-impedance path. Treating any high transient current (for example motor inrush or capacitive charging surge) as a short circuit. Immediate effects include large fault currents, heating, arcing, blown fuses or tripped breakers, mechanical damage and possible fire.
